What I’m Chucking 2013 Volume 1

Hi All,

So I’m still a bit undecided about the whole “Product’s I’ve used up” kind of post but until someone tells me this is a silly post i’ll continue on showing you my rubbish…. Part of the reason I like these is that I have a chance to give you my thoughts on some products which may not have featured elsewhere on the blog. I don’t really do product reviews on individual items so I like the opportunity to give a couple of words on stuff I’ve been using. So here is my first Volume of my rubbish for 2013 haha.

photo 11. Maybelline XXL Pro Mascara: This is a mascara that is so old it should have been chucked ages ago but I loved it so much I was reluctant! But off it goes! This was a double ended product with one side defining and lengthening (I think) and the other volumizing. I did love this but have since found equally if not better mascaras that I prefer and that are a bit easier and quicker to apply. Repurchase? I don’t think this is even still sold oops.

2. Olay Moisturizing Cream for Sensitive Skin: This was my go-to moisturizer for ages and was repurchased over and over. I love it because it’s moisturizing without feeling too heavy and doesn’t irritate my very sensitive skin. At the moment I am using a couple of different moisturizers just in an effort to be more adventurous but will most likely repurchase this in the future as it’s only $10 on special and does the job well.

3. Kleancolour Waterproof Eyeliner Pen: This was a piece of crap. I didn’t get a single stupid use out of this liquid eyeliner, pretty much the worse I’ve ever tried. I got this for like $5 at Postie Plus and I wasn’t expecting anything good but I was expecting SOMETHING. This just didn’t seem to work and left watery marks all over my hand no matter how much I played around trying to encourage something to happen. I really hope I just got a dud and they aren’t all this crap but I don’t plan on buying another.

4. Natio Pure Mineral Foundation: This is another product that is quite old. There’s a fair amount left in it but I never reach for it (I don’t think I’ve used it in months) and so not much point keeping it around. It was fine but quite light coverage for a foundation and nothing special. I have BB creams and other foundations I would prefer to use up so off it goes! Repurchase? Not likely.

5. evo:The great hydrator moisture mask: This was a sample I got in my first SampleBar pack but never quite got around to using until this year. I loved this and it did a beautiful job on the ends of my hair. I got quite a few uses because I mainly used it on my dry ends but the full size I know is quite expensive. Repurchase? If I see it somewhere I may consider but it’s a little out of my price range at the moment.

6. Kleancolour Mascara: Sorry for the extremely worn appearance of this, it was kept in my handbag, primarily for the mini mirror on the other side and as a backup mascara in case I forgot to wear and bring one. The mascara was pretty useless and dried up super quick so time to make more room for other makeup! Repurchase? Nope.

7. Vaseline Dry Skin conditioning lotion: I always try to have an abundance of creams and lotions for my dry skin and hands and this was a good backup when I ran out of my main hand cream or body lotion. Its all gone now and I may repurchase just because it‘s super cheap (around $3-4 at the Supermarket) and does a fine job when I need a quick moisture fix.

8. Cinnamon Mint Marvis Toothpaste: Another product from a SampleBar pack this was a small size of a lovely cinnamon flavored toothpaste! I rather loved this but probably won’t purchase the full size because it’s around $14 which is a little excessive for a toothpaste…

9. Sex and the City LOVE Shower Gel: This is the shower gel that came in a pack with the LOVE fragrance and the lotion and some mini sizes of two other fragrances. This is still practically full but being chucked because it doesn’t lather up well and doesn’t seem to do much other than smell okay. I have a lot of other shower gels I would prefer to use and this one isn’t great for my sensitive skin anyway. The lotion I kept although it’s a similarly crappy quality product because it doesn’t irritate my legs and so works as a simple leg and foot lotion.

10. Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil: I kept meaning to review this and never did and now its all gone! This was a lovely oil product that I used in a couple of different ways. I get eczema and irritation on my hands especially and I would add some drops of this to a tub of warm water to make a nice soak for my hands. It calmed down my skin and also put a lot of moisture into it as well. I also used this straight onto any scars or skin markings and it seemed to help those heal a bit better. It was also nice to add a couple drops to my night time moisturizer for an added level of moisture and also because the various oils all helped with fine lines and dry skin. It included cocoa butter, vitamin E, Sesame Oil, Canola oil, Cetesomate-E and Rosehip oil. For $11 this was a decent product but now I am using either pure organic rosehip oil or bio oil.

11. Lioele Beyond the Solution BB Cream: My beautiful friend Mish gave me this BB cream sample and I loved it! It is an asian BB cream so has quite a different feel compared to most of the ones we find here like the Garnier. It was really good coverage unlike my other Western BB creams and also had a slightly greyer tone if that makes sense. It made me look a little pale but a touch of my powder helped with that. Definitely interested in ordering a full size online as this lasted ages with a little going a really long way.

12. Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner: This is probably my favorite liquid liner that I’ve tried (although I haven’t tried many). It was in my first favorites post and I was very sad when it finished. Repurchase? Most likely when I next see it on special.

13. Paris Hilton perfume: This is so old I don’t even know if it has a name. This was one of the first perfumes I ever got and hence I didn’t ever want to throw it away. The scent originally I think was quite nice but quite young and girly so probably not something I would gravitate towards now. Also I’m certain it’s gone completely off and smells a bit rancid haha so definitely chucking now!

14. Kleancolour Wizard Pads (Nail Polish Remover Wipes with cuticle oil): First off these did not remove nail polish well AT ALL. They smudged it around a bit but I never succeeded in actually using these as nail polish remover. Once I accepted this small fact I loved these wipes! They were perfect after I used nail polish remover to get any last tiny bits off and to moisturize my cuticles. They had heaps of oil on them that felt wonderful on my nails and cuticles and one pad usually would last a couple of manicures which meant this pack lasted me ages! I also loved the cucumber scent! It was delish. I didn’t buy these, they were a Christmas gift from not last year but the year before (took me a while to start using them obviously haha) but if I do see them around I’ll definitely pick some more up.

15. Burt’s Bees Shampoo and Conditioner with Grapefruit and Sugar Beet: I won the two of these in a giveaway and was excited to try them out. These were another thing I kept meaning to review and never did. They are made with lots of organic products and stuff that’s nice and healthy for my hair which was great! The shampoo seemed to really deep clean my hair and I definitely needed the nice thick conditioner to restore some softness to it but in combination these two products worked great and my hair felt really healthy and clean. The scent is something that I think could put some people off as it is strong and smells “organic” if that makes sense… It was sweet but very citrusy from the grapefruit and I personally loved the fact that the scent wasn’t temporary and I could pick it up ever now and again throughout the day, but I know some people don’t like their hair to smell too strong. Repurchase? I’m pretty sure these are quite expensive so not sure if I will repurchase as I tend to use slightly cheaper (although not as nice) alternatives.

Whoo, that’s it. Sorry for the huge number of products. I’ll try do them a little more often so they aren’t quite so excessive haha. Let me know if you have used any of these products and what your thoughts are ūüôā

Taking care of my cuticles!

Hi all

Thought I would chuck up a quick post on my favorite products for cuticle care! Since stopping biting my nails I have become more than a little obsessed with nail polish and keeping my nails in good condition. These are 4 of my current cuticle care products, all of varying price and quality. The only other product I want to buy is Lush Lemony Flutter which I know is one of the most popular nail care products but $20 is a little expensive and I rarely go to a Lush store. ¬†Anyhow here are the ones I do have ūüôā I apologize in advance for the rather¬†decrepit¬†state of these but they often travel around and my handbag is not a gentle¬†environment¬† stuffed with books, nail files and goodness knows what else.

First up is another huge favorite on the internet, Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream. This is one of my ¬†favorites and the reason why I don’t bother with lemony flutter. This cuticle balm (not a cream as in the name, much more of a solid oil based product) is moisturizing without being overly greasy and I love the scent! It smells like fresh lemon juice, subtle and citrusy. This is a handbag staple for me. Also a little goes a long way so despite the slightly higher price tag compared to the others I think the value is still pretty good. My only negative for this product is the lid can be a pain in the ass to get off and sometimes it is hard to get enough product on your finger to rub on the cuticles.

Orly’s Cuticle Oil is another product I would repurchase as soon as it runs out. This is what I tend to use when I am doing nails at home or putting oil on near all my nail polish stuff as it’s not so easy to carry around in a bag. This is just a liquid oil which has a brush like any of their other nail care products, making application very easy and hassle-free. I love the smell of this, ¬†a soft and sweet citrus scent! And its great for massaging into the nails and cuticles, providing quite long lasting moisture. I believe this retails for around $9 at places like Farmers which I think is quite reasonable as I have had this for ages and use it all the time but it is still half full.

Badger Cuticle Care Balm: This is a similar product to the Burt’s Bee’s in that it is an oily formula in a tin that is easy to chuck in the handbag. The differences for me are that this product is a little less solid and more oily which means I feel it moisturizes better but also is greasier so I tend not to use when on the go/in a rush. It is a lot easier to get product out as it is a slightly softer texture. I love this brand as all their balms are full of organic ingredients! Keep an eye out for one of their products coming up in November favorites! I would rate this above Burt’s Bees purely because it is cheaper and yet bigger in size. Also I think I slightly prefer the smell (a fresh, lemongrass scent) however it is a lot stronger so maybe not so great for those sensitive to strong smells. Definitely recommend giving this or any of their other products a try.

Last up is the newest addition to my cuticle care range: Sally Hansen Cuticle Cream. I picked this up as it was only $8 from the local postie plus. This is definitely a cream, not a balm and I like that it isn’t to greasy and feels quite moisturizing. The smell is pleasant and not too strong and there are lots of oils and what nots to keep the nails healthy. However, of all 4 this is my least favorite and the only one I probably wouldn’t bother getting again. Firstly this was pretty much the contents of the pot when I opened the packaging and to me that is a pretty pathetic amount of cream (whereas the Lemony Flutter cream despite being expensive has a lot more product and would last a lot longer). Its possible I got a dud but who knows. Secondly I prefer some of the other organic products over this as they feel better on my skin in the long term whereas the moisturizing qualities of this wear off pretty quickly. Lastly…well I probably have enough products and don’t need one that I don’t think is quite up to the standards of the other three (might save up for Lush instead). ¬†Not a bad product, just not a favorite.

Overall Winner? It was tough to choose between top three but in the end I think the Badger Cuticle Balm is the best value for money! The tubs are only around $10 which is very reasonable considering the large size, great quality and use of organic products.

I have next month a full nail care post with some of my favorite products e.g. base coats, cuticle removers etc in case anyone is interested ūüôā

What do you use for cuticle care?

Foxy Favorites for October

Hi All!

October favorites are a bit late just due to exams and whatnot but here they are! Somehow I didn’t end up with many favorites which was a bit of surprise but I think study has stolen my inspiration and so I just went with a few basics I have been using throughout the month and loving.

Body Shop Fragrance in Indian Night Jasmine

First up here is my favorite fragrance for this month: Indian Night Jasmine from The Body Shop. I was lucky enough to win this and wasn’t expecting to use it that much as it is quite a strong, musky scent but after a few times the sultry scent of jasmine really grew on me. The “heaviness” of such a musky scent is less noticeable than I expected and the floral jasmine notes are rather delightful.¬†Definitely¬†a slightly more grown up scent and great for nights out (although I also use this during the day). The lasting time is good but not amazing but one spray is all you need to get a good fragrance that isn’t too overwhelming so having to reapply isn’t much of an issue.

Chi Chi Viva La Diva Matte Lipstick in Boy Magnet

Next up is one of my two favorite lipsticks! I have a few of these ChiChi lipsticks and I am seriously impressed! I chose Boy Magnet to show you because I was so happy to find a great matte red that looks amazing and lasts forever! Bimbo would be the other amazing shade which is a matte hot pink.¬†Definitely¬†check out the ChiChi range of lipsticks if they’re available.

Nivea Hand Cream: Pure and Natural (Protection)

This hand cream with argan oil from Nivea is my new favorite! It’s very affordable (I believe I got this for around $4 on special at the supermarket) and has a good level of moisture without leaving any greasy feeling behind. There are¬†definitely¬†hand creams¬†that are more moisturizing but I like using this in the day when I’m on the go. The scent is lovely too, normally I stick to unscented hand creams just due to sensitive skin but the fragrance is fresh and subtle, and I haven’t experienced any skin irritations.

Covergirl Exact Eyelights for Blue eyes (#710)

I don’t often wear a lot of eye makeup if any at all (besides mascara) but this quad palette from Covergirl is one that I constantly reach for if I want to wear something a little different. I love the green sage shade in the crease and the highlight shade the most. All the shades have fairly good pigmentation except for the blue. Whether it works well in brightening my eyes or not, I have no idea but all in all an easy to work with set of shades.

Maybelline Coloursensational in Pink Me Up (045)

I have had this for ages but it got lost in the bright pinks and reds for a while but lately I have been reaching for it a lot. This shade is a beautiful light warm pink that comes off as a soft nude pink on my lips. Very easy to wear and although it doesn’t last much more than a couple of hours its a breeze to reapply and isn’t very noticeable while it fades. I wear this all the time when I don’t feel like keeping a bright lip maintained throughout the day.

Burt’s Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate oil

I have so many lip balms it’s actually ridiculous so when I first tried the original Burt’s Bees lip balms and not liking it at all I was¬†disappointing¬†and a bit confused after hearing so many people rave about it. I gave the brand another chance when I tried this replenishing lip balm and I¬†absolutely¬†love it. The red balm gives a very slight tint to the lips but I mainly love it because it is incredibly¬†moisturizing¬†and leaves my lips feeling hydrated for ages! Has a slight scent but its not at all unpleasant. Sorry for its rather rough condition, this is one of those lip balms I just chuck in my bag each day.

OPI: Every Month is Ocktoberfest

Last up here is my nail polish favorite. This is the only nail polish from the Germany collection that I got but I¬†absolutely¬†adore it! It looked a bit average in the bottle but once on the nail its complex mix of mesmerizing burgundy/copper shimmer (which is obvious in the bottle shot) and a beautiful purple in the light (which is kind of captured in the second shot).¬†Once I’m in the sun I can’t stop looking at it. Seriously, it gets pretty¬†embarrassing. A beautiful colour especially for autumn/winter but as usual I can’t stop wearing it regardless of the weather.

There you go! My beauty favorites for the month of October. Keep an eye out for some random favorites which will be up tomorrow ūüôā

Hope you all had a great month and that next month is even better.

5 Winter Essentials

For New Zealand this winter has been wet and pretty miserable (for me at least) but thankfully spring is around the corner and that means pastel colours and *hopefully* a little less rain. These are some of the products that I have been reaching for this winter.

1. The Body Shop Body Butter in Candied GingerImage

This stuff is like heaven in the winter! I got this for half price ($20 NZ) as I assume it was part of their Christmas stock but in NZ Christmas is in the summer and I think this is much more appropriate for the winter time! The scent firstly is incredible…makes me smell like sweet ginger bread. The cream itself is thick and highly¬†moisturizing¬†(like most of their body butters) and thus I tended to use it more at night time before bed but it wouldn’t be too greasy for the daytime in Winter (in my opinion). I have dry and sensitive skin and this didn’t cause any irritation and did a great job at preventing dryness.
